HERE'S an unusual shot of Wide Westgate from a unique viewpoint.

That's because it was taken from the top of a tower crane which was on the site of The George Centre development in 1990, or St Peter's Place as it was originally called.
Part of the old George Hotel yard can be seen in the foreground being demolished. Blue Court is just above it. On the right is the cattle market and beyond that the old Corus buildings, both now retail developments.

It is remarkable, though, how many old buildings remain.
The picture was brought in by Mrs Panks, of Dudley Road, Grantham. Photo: 17419

THE Great War might have been raging in Europe, but it couldn't interrupt something as important as amateur football.

These lads, some too young to volunteer, played for New Somerby and Spittlegate United, winners of the Escritt-Bennett Cup.

The picture was taken on Grantham FC's Harlaxton Road ground, now the site of a car wash, with the railway sidings in the background. Note that the goalkeeper has a mascot doll around his neck.

From left are, back – W. Hunt, R. Marsh, R. Hill, F. Mableson, L. Logsden, B. Wing and J. Streeton; middle – G. Mugridge, R. Sharp and J. Dickenson; front – W. Wright, G. Johnson, T. Smith, F. Vurnum and R. Tyler. Photo: 6897K
