By George, we got soaked

Waiting for Video...

PERSISTENT rain did not deter the excited scouts on Sunday.

Hundreds of youngsters from various scouting groups across the area donned their water-proofs and set out on the annual St George’s Day parade through the town centre, while crowds lined St Peter’s Hill and the High Street to cheer them on from under their umbrellas.

Also taking place in St Peter’s Hill on Sunday was the St George’s Day family fun day. Although the heavy downpours had an effect on the turn-out of people, organiser Ged McKnight hailed the event a success.

Mr McKnight, a member of Grantham Events Group, said: “Considering the weather, we had a very good turn-out in the morning.

“The stalls we had were selling good, quality merchandise, and the music played included a wide and varied selection of tracks.

“It was nice to see everyone waving their flags.”

There was a breadth of activities for families to enjoy, including a Punch and Judy show, morris dancing and a 1930s and ‘40s dance demonstrations and display by well-known DJ Major Swing. There were also rides for children, a steam traction engine, London bus and Aveling and Barford road roller.

Pupils of Isaac Newton Primary School were heavily involved in the day, putting on a display of Maypole dancing and a play focusing on the traditional story of St George and the dragon.

Mr McKnight said: “The child who played the dragon was excellent. She really got into it. The rest of the kids were really good but she was the star of the show.”
