A care home in Grantham is celebrating 25 years with a second special award for the quality of its work.

Harrowby Lodge, on Harrowby Lane, Grantham, has been awarded a Gold Standards Framework Award, commend status, three years after it was first recognised for the excellent way in which it cares for its residents in the final months of their lives.

The home was opened in 1987 by sisters Sue Smith and Julie Neville who say the home is almost unique in that it is still a family business and not part of a larger company.

Sue said: “Harrowby Lodge opened its doors in November 1987 with 16 beds and 32 staff. Today we have 30 beds and over 60 staff.

“During our time we have seen many changes, and, we, like many others are governed by paperwork. In all the time we have been open our staff have been dedicated to the care of our residents, which has always been our first priority.

“Harrowby is managed as a small, unique family home. Our staff are highly motivated through training and have the opportunity to develop, as shown in our Gold Standards Framework Award.”

Maggie Stobbart-Rowlands, of the Gold Standards Framework in Care Homes, said: “The GSF Care Homes programme has helped all of these homes embed quality care for all their residents as they approach the end of their lives. Many of the homes have more than doubled the number of people fulfilling their wish to die in their care home and halved the rate of crisis hospital admissions. GSF is helping to transform end of life care in this sector. We hope that this gold standard of care will become the de facto standard to which all care homes will aspire and that they receive the recognition they deserve for all their hard work.”
