A DISTRICT councillor has launched a bid to have the eastern part of Grantham designated as a conservation area, following the demolition of a historic building.

South Kesteven District Council member Charmaine Morgan was inspired to launch the campaign following the demolition of the Shirley Croft Hotel in Harrowby Road.

She has formed Grantham Conservation Action Group and has compiled a report listing the buildings and green spaces of historic significance in the area, centring around the Harrowby Road area.

Coun Morgan said: “We have lost the Shirley Croft so a number of residents and I got together to set up an action group.

“There’s a rich industrial history in Grantham. But Grantham has got much less conservation than other market towns in South Kesteven. Stamford has got its own pro-active group and we want to do something similar.

“If a building is in a conservation area it has a degree of protection.

“The St Anne’s area is particularly important because it reflects Victorian growth.”

The group has submitted an application to SKDC to create the conservation area.

Group member Marilyn Campbell, who is also involved with Grantham Civic Society, said: “Grantham is packed with history, which is disappearing.”

l On Tuesday South Kesteven District Council’s development control committee will consider plans to demolish one of the buildings in the group’s document - a Victorian house, formerly used as a children’s home, on the corner of st Catherine’s Road and Dudley Road - to make way for a retirement development.

See next week’s Journal for a report on the meeting.

After the horse has bolted ... ! The demolition of the Shirleycroft was approved by the Council of which Ms M is part .. The Council already has all sorts of expensively-produced and prettily-designed strategy documents in place referring to the preservation of the character of Grantham but everywhere you look tells a story of litter-strewn neglect and decay together with the tolerance given over many years to inappropriate building ..
