A BINGHAM woman celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday with her family and friends.

Hilda Sykes, of Harrison Court, said: “I’ve had a good time. It’s nice to see my family and friends.”

Hilda, who lived in Grantham in the 1950s, was born in Derby and has moved around a lot during her life.

She worked as a clerk for the railway before marrying Victor Smith and having three children; Janet, Rosemary and Patricia.

During the war she volunteered for the British Red Cross.

Patricia said: “Mum’s neighbours have put on a lovely birthday tea for her and we are having a family meal at Gunthorpe and hopefully a boat ride.”

Hilda was widowed in her 40s and devoted much of her time to her young children.

Patricia said: “She brought the three of us up and Rosemary was handicapped. She’s a fantastic mum, she’s made a lot of sacrifices for us. I’m really proud of her. The most important thing is to be a good example and she is.”

Later in her life Hilda married Arthur Sykes, they enjoyed walking and hiking together.

Hilda also liked cycling, art and paintings.

Patricia added: “The secret of a long life is fresh air, exercise and a good diet.”
