Kick the drunks out of our town centre
Am I alone in feeling intimidated by the people drinking beer in Grantham Town Centre, in particular, around the statues on St. Peter’s Hill?
I always believed that this was illegal yet recently. What must visitors to our town think when they see this sort of behaviour? I thought that the days were gone when you saw people drinking from beer cans in the street.

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 03:28 PMUnfortunately drinking in public is not illegal and the police can only request people to stop if the drinking is contributing to anti social behaviour. Giving them a £1000 is pointless as they have no money so won't be able to pay it. Who's to say if they weren't drinking beer then they wouldn't congregate in the town centre still? What then, move them on because people don't like the sight of them. And that's what this letter boils down to really! @2 is right, peoples behaviour in this town on a friday and saturday night is shockingly disgusting. You know it's bad judging by the amount of coppers you see walking about. I'm sure they could be doing better things than babysitting grown idiots who can't handle themselves.

Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 05:24 PMIntimidated? Really?? Now don't get me wrong, it is unpleasant, but in all the years I've lived here I've never once been accosted or even approached by any of the people who drink in the town centre. What I do find intimidating is walking through town on a Friday or Saturday night through the throngs of so called "regular people" who work all week and only go out at weekends to "blow off steam" or "let their hair down". That's the kind of times when I've witnessed countless fights and acts of violence, the kind of times when I've been accosted by strangers too inebriated to act with any dignity, self respect or social decorum. Why is it that people in this town are so quick to nit pick the minor details while neglecting the obvious deep seated issues we really should be tackling?

Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 04:02 PMnot alone and this area you mentin has the signage displayed on the lamp posts saying about it being illegle and a fine to be imposed if found. that area just seems to be a doss about for them to drink. wonder why the community policeman who walks about tthe town doesnt do anything. i think the fine is a max £1000 start fining them see if that discourages them
