Lincolnshire police commissioner candidate stands down over 1968 conviction

THE Labour candidate for the post of Lincolnshire police commissioner has stood down after it was revealed he was fined £5 for handling stolen goods in 1968, when he was 16 years old.

Deepings councillor Phil Dilks said he was the victim of a “schoolboy prank” after a friend left a crash helmet in his parent’s garage. The culprit was never found, but police charged Mr Dilks after the stolen item was found.

Mr Dilks said: “I’m advised it is unlikely case records still exist. But it would not be honest of me to pretend it never happened.”

His withdrawal means there will be four candidates for the job. An election will be held on November 15.
