Quiet first public meeting on future of Grantham’s healthcare services

Not many people attended the first public consultation meeting on the future of healthcare services in Grantham, which took place at the council offices on Wednesday.
Members of the clinical commissioning group (CCG), who have decided on the plans, were on hand to answer any questions people had.
Last week the Shaping Health for Mid Kesteven consultation document was revealed. It includes like closing the maternity unit at the hospital, joining A&E and out of hours to create an A&E Care Centre, and increasing the provision of planned care.
Accountable officer for the South Lincolnshire CCG Allan Kitt said: “This is a great chance to talk with people. We need to be able to answer the really awkward questions.”
One of the hot topics people were asking about was the potential closure of the maternity unit.
Mr Kitt said: “The main reason for not having a full service is that we don’t have the population. Looking over the next 10 years we will not have the number of births to justify a full maternity service. Many people weren’t aware that Grantham doesn’t have a full obstetrics unit.”
Head of improvement and delivery Clair Raybould said people attending the meeting were pleased to have a range of people from the CCG, including GPs, ready to answer questions.
She said: “We’ve had a reaction to the maternity unit.
“People that I’ve spoken to seem to understand where we’re coming from, we need the best use of the resources and space at Grantham Hospital.
“Most people just want a bit of further information. Everybody I’ve spoken to has been really positive, it’s the first time in their history they’ve heard A&E is safe.”
