‘The amount of rubbish found was unbelievable’

A ROAD sign, several traffic cones, two shopping trolleys, a computer keyboard, a printer, a 4x4 tyre, a clothes drier and 23 bags full of rubbish.

All of these items were removed by volunteers from a stretch of the River Witham between Bridge End Road and Wyndham Park in just two hours at the weekend.

The 16 Grantham Rivercare volunteers were amazed by the sheer amount of rubbish callously dumped in the short stretch of river.

Grantham Rivercare leader John Knowles said: “The amount of rubbish which had accumulated since we were last out a couple of months ago was unbelievable.

“We’ve been cleaning the river for seven years now so you would think it would be getting better but it seemed to have gone backwards this time.

“It makes you wonder what it would be like if we didn’t go out!”

The 23 bags of rubbish were filled mostly with empty beer bottles and cans.

However, there were also positives, not least seeing kingfishers and spawning trout.

The volunteers plan to return in February.

I am aware that a couple in the photo are individuals well into their 80's, how can the accountable authority's in Grantham allow this river to be cleaned in exasperation by people such as this. Grantham is an ugly town, however one of its redeemable features is the riverbank and the St Wulfram's and Grantham House area. Have the council so little pride in the town they they cannot even take responsibility for keeping this area tidy. Shame on the officials responsible for this lack of action.

SO. 23 bags full of Beer cans and Bottles fished from the Witham proves that the Eastern Europeans have more disposable income than us Brits. Time to either 'Toe the Line' or return to your war torn wreckage that you were so eager to abandon in search of a decent country to foul.
