A GROUP of staff and parents at Denton CE School have just gained national vocational qualifications (NVQs) in a range of subjects.

The headteacher of the school Sheriden Edwards started offering the Government funded courses 18 months ago.

She said: “We got a really good response. But I wasn’t surprised by how many people volunteered.

“The staff all want to improve and it’s always nice when there’s a qualification to get with it.

“It’s been really beneficial for them and the school.”

Most of the volunteers have completed their courses, the rest are just finishing their last modules.

Sheriden added: “We’re really proud of them.

“It sends a really positive message to the children that learning doesn’t stop when we leave school.”

Some of the parents have been employed by the school since completing their qualifications and others were offered extra responsibilities.

Wendy Padgett took a teaching assistant NVQ. She used to work in the breakfast club at the school but now she also does administration and assists the teachers.

She said: “I just wanted to get more qualifications and hopefully improve my career prospects. It went very well but there was a lot of hard work involved. I would definitely do more NVQs if they were offered. It was fantastic.”
