Were planners right to block these development applications? YOU decide!?

St Catherine's House will stand a little while longer following Tuesday's decision.

St Catherine's House will stand a little while longer following Tuesday's decision.

PLANS for two new developments in Grantham were rejected this week with a third blocked by a deferral.

A proposed new KFC would have replaced the derelict Isaac Newton pub in Harlaxton Road. Council planners approved the demolition of the pub last month.

However, South Kesteven District Council planners refused to accept the proposed new restaurant because of the appearance of the building, possible anti-social behaviour problems, littering and concerns over the access road.

Coun Adam Stokes said: “I complained as soon as I saw the plans as it looks like Domino’s or Sally’s in London Road.”

Planning officers received 16 letters objecting to the proposals, with one complaining that “Grantham’s population is already obese”.

Councillors voted by nine votes to three to reject the proposal.

Furious councillors also turned down plans for eight homes to be built on the site of the soon to be demolished Shirley Croft Hotel.

Councillors were not pleased that recommendations to developers made at the previous meeting, requesting half of the buildings be made single storey, were seemingly ignored.

Coun Adam Stokes said: “I’m not going to accept this and if the developer is not happy, he knows where he can go.”

The proposal was rejected unanimously by councillors citing an adverse impact on neighbours, including loss of privacy. The developers told planning officers prior to the meeting that they will not be making any more amendments.

A building of “outstanding local interest” was also given a short stay of execution after a deferral.

Developers McCarthy and Stone Retirement Lifestyles plan to demolish St Catherine’s House in St Catherine’s Road and replace it with a 44-apartment retirement complex.

Coun Charmaine Morgan spoke out against the proposal, arguing that Grantham has already lost too many of its historic buildings.

Coun Morgan said: “It is time we started protecting the Victorian heritage assets we have here in Grantham.”

Councillors voted by 11 votes to three to defer the application, asking the developers to look again at the size of the complex, the entrance to the building off Dudley Road and to investigate whether the existing building could be incorporated into the design. Great post Grumblealot. This so called local 'newpaper' is shown up for what it is - a wanna be red top. Instead of trying to stir up trouble or jumping upon the latest band waggon it should support the town and those trying to improove things. This rag critisised he buildings on the London RoadBridge End Road junction and so if the Journal wants to be consistent it should actually praise the authorities for appearing to listen to them by refusing the building of more eyesores.

Yes, they were correct to block these developments... they have outlined the reasons and expressed thier point of view on the issue , and then along comes a singular person , not '' the journal says '' who decides it will stir it up a bit by going off at a tangent .... Every one knows its tough for businesses at the minute as it is for everyone , we are all struggling ... it was said the other day in the national press that they wanted to bring in a benefits cap of £26,500 to bring it in line with the national average wage ... Our family has never been paid anything like that amount as a household income let alone a singular wage ... We between us work regularly more than a hundred hours per week and receive not a penny in handouts .. all 3 of our jobs are deemed to be at risk . However allowing bad building practices , poor planning decisions , poor road safety issues , letting builders do just what ever they want even if it is in the face of already agreed planning outlines and riding rough shod over local residents opinion WILL NOT improve our and many others short term financial circumstances. What it will do is remove what little character and history that Grantham and district has got left . Just compare Grantham to Stamford Newark or Melton .. We have lost enough This is a planning matter not an excuse to have yet another go at SKDC bashing , which the GJ seems to do more than its share of , instead of waving a big stick at SKDC how about putting your shoulder to the wheel , BE A LOCAL PAPER SUPPORTING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND THE LOCAL AUTHORITY THAT IS TRYING HARD TO SUPPORT EVERYONE.
