THIS 16-seater bike from the National Cycle Museum at Belton House was taken into Chandlers Farm Equipment at Belton in 1981 to be serviced.

Former director Walt Barber, of Grantham, brought in the picture, which was taken to mark the occasion.

The cycle was used in many sketch shows and films and featured in a book by Spike Milligan.

SOUTH Kesteven District Council launched an inquiry following complaints that young children were afraid to use Dysart Park in Grantham due to problems with older youths and the alleged "hardline attitude" of park staff.

* Seventy-four-year-old Eric Bristow, of Manthorpe, was judged the region's Gardener of the Year by Garden News magazine.

* Members of Grantham Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament group, with faces whitened and wearing black clothes, paraded in Watergate carrying placards.

* Coun John Wilks blasted the district council for holding secret sessions and its "rather arrogant behaviour" after public and press were banned from planning committee meetings.

WHEN 'Gwen' Dickens, of Park Road, Grantham, lost her wrist watch in a Great Yarmouth street while on holiday, it was found by top comedian 'Cheerful' Charlie Chester who was appearing in a show there.

* An exhausted young puffin, discovered by David Fox in a field off Belton Lane, Great Gonerby, was released into the sea at Gibraltar Point.

* Grantham Market committee accepted a tender of 5,116 to build a market stall-house and public toilet in Union Street.

* The Town Council approved a recommendation from its general purposes committee to change early-closing day from Thursday to Wednesday.

* John Dean, of Brittain Drive, Grantham, was hailed a hero after diving into Poole Harbour to rescue an 11-year-old boy who was drowning.

100 Years Ago

MEMBERS of the Wesleyan Sewing Meeting in Grantham were driven in brakes to Belton Park for their annual tea, which was held in the Riding School.

* At the annual meeting of Little Gonerby Rovers FC, members opted to continue to play friendlies rather than join the Grantham and District League.

* The Town Council's education committee granted 'labour certificates' to five boys who had the required number of school attendances to allow them to leave school and find work.

* Sparks from a steam engine, cultivating in fields at Great Gonerby, were blamed for a fire which destroyed buildings containing fodder and equipment valued at 200 at Black Barn, near the railway.
