11/04/08 - Firm's miniature rifle club members were all crack shots
AMONG the many activities available to employees of Ruston and Hornsby was the miniature rifle club.

Their indoor shooting range was above the agricultural section (or binder shop) on the east side of London Road. There was also an outdoor range at the sports field on Spittlegate Level.
Judging by the number of trophies they were all good shots. Among the members in this photo from the early 1950s are Arthur Morton, Dick Huddlestone and Jim Pinchbeck.
Can anyone name them all, give further details of the club or a precise date for this photograph?

Cricketers made cranes in their day jobs

THIS photo is most likely of the cricket team of cranemakers RH Neal, which occupied the site which is now Autumn Park. It was taken in the early 1950s.
Among the players are Lewis Ranby (on the back row by the 'W'), who was better known as a tennis player, with John Goode in front of him, and Arthur Marshall, who was secretary of Grantham Hospital. On the front row are, from left – Stan Spackman, Ken Parnham and John Holt.

Army cadets were on camp in Devon

THESE lads were members of the 2nd Battalion Royal Anglian Army Corps, based in a hut on the Meres off Trent Road.
The lads were on a two-week camp at Okehampton, Devon.
On the front row are, from left – Colin Smith, Dave Brown, Tony Retford, Nigel Parker and Mick Clarke. Mark Scott and Steven Russell are on the back row.

THE county council put forward an idea for a 2 million scheme to link the A1 to the A52 by upgrading Gorse Lane and South Parade and building a new junction at Gainsborough Corner in Grantham.
* Staff at Grantham Railway Station were issued with special guidelines to help curb the rising toll of suicides on the rail line through town.
* Four months after he had mislaid his wallet in a taxi in town, Colin Blankley, of Harrowby Lane, received it back via Australia.
* Grantham violinist Eleanor Parry, 17, a pupil at Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School, won the Peterborough Young Musician of the Year competition.
* Fourteen-year-old Grantham runner Steven Ablitt, a pupil at St Wulfram's School, became the under-15 cross-country champion of Great Britain.

THE driver of a cattle transporter and his passenger were injured when it overturned on the A1 at Colsterworth, but the 36 cattle on board escaped without a scratch.
* Banks in Grantham said they were well-stocked with the new 1 coin ready for its introduction to replace the 1 note.
* King's School pupil Kim Smedley and Deborah Oswin, of Walton Girls', both 15, won the under-16s title at the East Midlands Disco Championships.
* A piece of enamelled tin found by Alan Roberts in a former stable block he was converting to a home at Great Gonerby turned out the be the wall plaque from Grantham's original Labour exchange in Watergate.
* The county transportation and planning sub-committee gave the go-ahead for Grantham Mencap to convert Fairview Farm, Barrowby, as a residential home.

THIEVES targeted Great Ponton Church over the Easter weekend and stripped about 8cwt of lead fittings from the roof.
* Grantham Police leapt into action to rescue a one-year-old cat that had got trapped on the ledge of Harlaxton Road railway bridge, with the use a special 'cat-grabber' piece of equipment.
* "Skiffle enthusiast" Lonnie Donegan and his group topped the bill at a variety show at the Granada theatre on St Peter's Hill.
* All the estates on the eastern side of Grantham, almost one quarter of the town's houses, were left without water for several hours when a trunk main in the Bath Field area burst.
* Centenary celebrations at Green Street Methodist Church, Great Gonerby, on Good Friday and Easter Sunday were led by the Rev S. T. Stratford.

HANNAH Bursnall, of Skillington, celebrated her 104th birthday, rising at 7am and walking to her front gate.
* The annual Grantham Pleasure Fair opened in stormy weather which "reduced the streets to a pitiable state of muddiness".
* The Grantham of the British Women's Temperance Association entertained around 200 showmen and their families to a tea and social in the Westgate Hall.
* Eliza Taylor, "a middle-aged woman, respectably dressed", was fined five shillings (25p) at Grantham Police Court after having been wheeled in a barrow to the police station because she was too drunk to stand.
* A meeting of church people at the Girls' School, Castlegate, formed a committee to look at a proposal to build a Church Institute on the "sandy playground" at the rear of the Boys' School.
