Batting first...Gary Lineker

HE may be more famous for the eating of crisps these days but Gary Lineker was in his pomp when he came to Grantham in 1987.

The England star had finished as the top scorer in the previous year’s World Cup but here he was turning out for the MCC against the King’s School at the King’s School playing fields in North Parade.

Vic Heppenstall umpired the match - as he has each of the 27 games between the two sides over the years.

He said: “Gary Lineker was a gentleman and David Strorer (front row, far right) was a Grantham player for the England Amateur XI - which was as good as you could really do.

“He was a fine player.”

Others pictured include Tony Wade who is still playing for Belvoir CC and Vic’s fellow umpire Denis Gascoyne.
