25 YEARS AGO
* Teens Andrew Cartwright and Paul Clawson walked 150 miles around Lincolnshire to raise more than £400 for the provision of a soft play area for Sandon School.
* Police were asking for help from members of the public as they sought to catch three muggers who robbed a woman in Grantham.
* Grantham Town’s Gary Crosby was signed by Nottingham Forest for £15,000. Forest also promised to play Town in a friendly.
50 YEARS AGO
* Around 100 people reported problems with their water supply over the Christmas period after three mains pipes burst.
* No babies were born in Grantham Hospital on Christmas Day but Pamela Bennett of Ryde Avenue gave birth to a daughter at home.
* Grantham shopkeepers reported a late surge in Christmas shopping which they put down to the weather and “possible apprehension due to the employment position.”
100 YEARS AGO
* The Journal reported huge congregations at the town’s churches for the “great festival of the nativity”.
* “Christmastide football has been carried on under conditions about as bad as one could conceive,” reported the Journal.
* Grantham Post Office was reporting one of their busiest years on record with the number of parcels and letters dealt with described as “enormous”.
