Hundreds came for the Belvoir Hunt
The Belvoir Hunt in 2000 was held amid national controversy.
SEVERAL hundred people were in St Peter’s Hill in 2000 for the Boxing Day Belvoir Hunt meet.
With the possibility of a ban on fox hunting looking increasingly likely, the annual event was becoming increasingly political.
Grantham Mayor Mike Williams chose to remain in the Mayor’s Parlour rather than greet the fox hunters in protest at the hunt.
The mayor normally takes out the stirrup cup but in 2000 the job fell to the mayor’s officer Eric Tuckwood and town clerk Pat Corton, accompanied by district council chairman Reg Lovelock.
During the 2000 meet, hunt supportes handed out leaflets urging the public to write to their MP asking them to vote against any hunting ban.
Fox Hunting was banned in 2004 but the Belvoir Hunt continues each Boxing Day.
