Incredible escape from lorry smash

Lorry Pics.

Lorry Pics.

A DEVASTATED lorry lies in ruins but what could have caused such immense damage?

The answer is a Second World War bomber.

But rather than dropping its load onto the stricken vehicle, the damage was instead done during an emergency landing.

The photographs were sent in by Jane Jones, whose grandad lived in High Road, Barrowby. He was driving the lorry for Porters, based in Manthorpe Road, Grantham.

She said: “He was delivering to Normanton Airfield when what we think was a Halifax hit him.

“They were mainly Canadian crew and nobody was killed but some were taken to Rauceby Hospital, which was then a military hospital, to be patched up.

“Grandad was dropped off on the way home.”

Jane is not certain when the accident took place but said her grandfather only had the Bedford lorry from November 1942 and it was scrapped in February 1943.

She said: “If he had still been driving his old wooden frame lorry then he would have been killed.”
