Mr W. Hattersley
Obit - HATTERSLEY
MR Wilfred Hattersley (Wilf), of Sandon Close, Grantham, has died at home. He was 79.
Born in Oldham, Lancashire, to Wilfred and Amy Hattersley, he was the eldest of four children.
His early school days were spent at Poulton-le-Fylde, Blackpool, staying with his grandad while his father was working in Birkenhead.
The family moved to Grantham just before the Second World War and lived in Walton Gardens. He attended Spitalgate School.
Later, as a teenager, he did two years’ National Service in Osnabruck, Germany.
In 1953 he married Tess and they had a son, Mark. His wife developed a long-term illness and she was devotedly looked after by him until her death in 1983, aged 49.
In 1989 he married Marlene and they had a very happy marriage for 23 years.
Mr Hattersley left school at the age of 14 and did an apprenticeship as a car mechanic at Grantham Motor Company. Later he worked on the railway and then moved to Aveling Barford, where he worked as a test and rectification inspector. Unfortunately his working life was curtailed early due to serious illness.
Mr Hattersley enjoyed many card games and played cribbage for the British Legion, winning many trophies.
He was vice-chairman of the Three Gables football team and life president of Welby Cricket Club. He enjoyed sport on the television and loved his holidays in Bournemouth. Together with Marlene he ran a social group for several years at the Sandon Close Community Centre, until illness intervened.
He was proud of being grandad to Brooke.
The Rev Anne Jablonski conducted the funeral service at Grantham Crematorium Chapel.
