MRS Betty Ann Townsend, of Manton Hall Care Home, Manton, Rutland, has died there. She was 83.

Born in Gillingham, Kent, she was the daughter of Thomas and Florence Cobb and had a sister, Joyce.

She married at the age of 28 and went on to have four children, Philip, Caryl, Dawn and Helen and six grandchildren.

On leaving school at the age of 14, she became a shop assistant. She then worked as a postwoman until the age of 21, when she joined the WRAF and was stationed at RAF Seletar.

Later she worked as an auxilliary nurse at Catmose, Oakham, and from 1978, she worked for the MoD at RAF North Luffenham and RAF Cottesmore until her retirement.

Mrs Townsend enjoyed knitting and she also did lots of fund-raising and voluntary work. She worked for the WRVS, working at Grantham Hospital, and Stocken and Ashwell prisons in the tea bar.

Every Easter, she raised money for Grantham Hospital and the Air Ambulance, by knitting chicks to sell.

The funeral service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, conducted by Robert Holland.

Dawson, Robert Jones, Caryl Jones, Ron Saunders, Steve De Visme, Sue and John Rosie, Stella Wilton, Mr and Mrs Fowler, Pat and Peter Bray, Angela Bailey, Rebecca Edwards, Sheila Philips, Jean Owen, Audrey Austin, Dawn Lees, Michael Lees, Philip Townsend, Rosemarie Townsend, Andrew and Amy Townsend, Helen Bennett, Kevin Bennett, Joe Bennett, Martin Bennett, Scott Green, Claire Baines, Debbie Collier, Nigel and Janice Harvey, Dorothy Reader, Doris and Gerald Speakman, Judith Kenna, Chris Weston, Val Twigg and Mr and Mrs Hogg.

Funeral arrangements were by Lily and Rose of Wymondham.

Donations were received for Cancer Research UK.
