Published Date: 02 April 2008
Wednesday, 4.15pm - EIGHT huge lorries delivering aggregate for re-surfacing work in Grantham parked along a busy street close to a school crossing this afternoon, causing chaos.
The lorries were parked along one side of Harrowby Road, partially blocking the pavement and obscuring the view of the road for parents and children crossing from St Anne's School.

Mother of two Victoria Manley, of Dysart Road, was picking her kids up from school.

She said: "It has to be dozy parker of the year. They were blocking the spot where the lollipop lady usually helps the children across the road.

"Mrs Tilley, the lollipop lady, was fantastic though. She managed to get all those children across that road very safely."

John Thacker, who lives in Croft Drive, off Harrowby Road, said he could not believe the lorries were parked like this.

He said: "They are bumper to bumper. Anyone who has run a business before should know that all they need to do is phase the arrival of the vehicles so they are not all arriving at the same time.

"It is dangerous with the schoolchildren coming out and it's causing chaos."

When the Journal went to photograph the lorries, some of the drivers were standing on the pavement drinking tea and others were sitting in their trucks.

Brian Thompson, from Lincolnshire County Council's highways department, which is responsible for the work in Bridge End Road, said: "Brian Thompson, Divisional Highways Manager said: "There had been a breakdown of machinery on site causing the backlog of delivery vehicles.
"
Our contractors RIS apologise for the drivers of delivery vehicles parking in this area and will ensure it will not occur for the remainder of the works."
