DURING the past 50 years Grantham Operatic Society has probably sung every song written by Gilbert & Sullivan.
In GaS Carte they deliver 26 favourites whie telling the story behind the creation of a musical phenomenon still popular over one hundred years on.

The tale is told with musical excerpts from all the G&S operettas linked by snatches of dialogue and headlines from the newspapers of the day.

Unique to the production, adapted by the society's former director, the late David Duffey, are two spinsters, Miss Primas and Miss Tipseon, played by Tania Lambley and Carolyn Sands, who gossip about the lack of respectability portrayed in London theatres.

As the story unfolds the audience learn of the tempestuous relationship endured by William Gilbert (Martin Grant) and Arthur Sullivan (Kevin O'Neill) and Gilbert's distrust of theatrical producer Richard D'Oyly Carte (Martin Olly) which eventually led to the break up of the partnership.

Throughout the story the news headlines are delivered with great assurance by newcomers Jack Danford, Jake Brindley and Callum Gray.

Sharon Robson's creative direction ensured pace was maintained throughout and the choreography, whilst simple, was very effective.

The minimalist set puts the cast at the centre of the performance.

Whether you are new to G&S or an authority, this show is a must see.

The show continues Friday and Saturday with tickets available from the Guildhall Arts Centre. Call the box office on 01476 406158.
