02/05/08 - Denis Morgan - Memory Lane page had two readers casting their minds back 50 years
THE reference to the Aveling Barford grader order to the Argentine (Memory Lane, April 25) took me down memory lane, as I worked in the Argentine organising and carrying out the demonstrations of the 99H grader to procure this order.
There was fierce competition from grader manufacturers worldwide, we had to demonstrate our machines capabilities on all aspects of road construction and soil terrace conservation.
The total contract was for 170 of the 99Hs, plus spares. The total value was a million pounds.
I have a cutting of your original front page report, unfortunately I didn't record the date.
Sad to witness the demise of such a great company, one that Grantham was justifiably proud of. We had a great reputation worldwide for quality engineering, produced by a highly skilled workforce of Grantham craftsmen.
The company was represented in over 120 countries worldwide.
Having started as an apprentice in 1945 I spent 46 very happy years there and travelled extensively overseas for them.
