09/05/08 - My dad floated down the river when the bridge collapsed

I WAS interested in seeing the flood photograph sent in by Mrs Clarke (Memory Lane, Journal, April 25).
I also have that photograph and remember the large tree in the distance which was growing in our garden.
Two men were on the bridge when it collapsed in two in August 1922.
One was my uncle, Robert Virden, who lived at 22 Witham Place. He was quickly helped to safety.
My father, Alfred Wyman, who lived at 200 Dudley Road, went down with the bridge and within seconds was floating in the strong current.
At last he reached the tree and clung to a branch which was already under water, climbing higher until the police managed to rescue him and save his life.
