09/05/08 - New powers will allow police to nip trouble in the bud

IN response to Mr Shorrock's letter (No need for booze exclusion zone Grantham Journal 02/05/08), he is technically incorrect when he says "the police already have all the powers to confiscate alcohol".
Currently, the police and PCSOs can only confiscate alcohol from persons under 18.
Under the new order (which comes into effect on May 19) they will have powers to confiscate alcohol from over-18s who commit most of the alcoholfuelled anti-social behaviour in South Kesteven.
The Designated Public Place Orders, which was unanimously accepted by councillors and strongly supported by our residents in a recent consultation, will provide police with additional powers to nip drunken
and disorderly behaviour in the bud. Surely a proactive solution
is more cost effective and beneficial to the local community than tackling trouble once it has escalated!
Limiting access via Redcross Street during the night is not designed to "punish law abiding citizens".
It is a scheme initiated and supported by those who live there, to stop anti-social behaviour and drink-fuelled crime.

Community Safety Officer
