09/05/08 - Price of train ticket could put people off moving to the town and commuting
I COMMUTE to London every day for work, as do a lot of other people in Grantham, recently the franchise for this route was taken over by National
Express.
I have just inquired about the cost of an annual season ticket and the price has been raised a staggering 9 per cent to £6,312, which is the maximum they are allowed to raise it by. While the company has increased the price it has made little or no improvement to the punctuality or standard of the trains and has even taken away the benefit package that was in place under the previous franchise.
By doing this it is making it increasingly difficult to justify
commuting and will put a lot of people off moving to Grantham which can only be bad for this already struggling town.
They are able to do this because they have a virtual monopoly on the route and have obviously decided to capitalise on this as quickly as possible.
I would ask that other commuters check with National Express and confirm this increase and if like me you are disgusted by it complain to them in writing and also inform them that you will be contacting the passenger support groups and your MP.
