IN 1959 I was an 18-year-old passed cleaner (spare fireman) on the railway, on loan for two years from Grantham to Kings Cross – known as "Top Shed".
One early morning a fireman was under the weather so I was asked to take his turn. For our return trip from Grantham to King's Cross we had 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley.

It was only the second time I had been on a mainline express and was delighted to be on such a class engine.
The driver congratulated me, said I'd done "awhight".
