18/07/08 - Rob Shorrock - Housing services audit should not be dismissed in this belligerent way
Published Date:

THE arrogance displayed by South Kesteven District Council leader Linda Neal to the recent report into housing services is breathtaking. (Journal, July 11).
This is the second time in the last three years under her leadership that SKDC has failed an independent audit and the conclusion of the audit office, like before, is that 'services are poor with uncertain prospects for improvement'.
What Mrs Neal seems to forget is that the point of independent inspection is to help local authorities learn and improve services.
It is not just a tick-box exercise, it is a way of providing officers of the council with a clear sense of what needs to be improved and the public with an external assessment of the quality of those services.
Instead of dismissing it in such a belligerent way, SKDC should try to genuinely learn from the report.
However, following Mrs Neal's outburst I have my doubts.
