I read Father Norton H. Collard's piece on the importance of Christian morals (Journal, September 12) that apparently society lacks in this day and age. I think he is completely wrong.
It is not Christian morals which people need but basic manners and decency, which the majority of the British public have. Throughout history there has been a minority who cause trouble and don't follow and believe in social norms and values, even when Britain was a largely religious country.
I fail to see why we need Christian values - if our morals must be based upon religious beliefs why not follow the morals and rules of Islam, as Muslims believe in dignity, peace and love. Christianity is not a superior religion to any other and we definitely do not need to return to the Church.
I recognise that religion has done good but it is also oppressive to many with out-dated beliefs that offend women, homosexuals and minority groups.
We do not need religion to guide us, we know what is right and what is wrong from being taught morals at home and in other places of education. Britain is meant to be a pluralistic society with many different religions followed, not Christianity first and everything else second.
