LOVE was certainly in the air on Wednesday as Cecilia and Geoffrey Winter celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their Grantham home.
They were married at St John’s Church, in Grantham, on August 17, 1961, where Geoffrey was organist for 51 years.
The reception was held at St Wulfram’s School, followed by a lovely time down in Whitby for their honeymoon – staying in a farmhouse for a week.
Cecilia, 72 and Geoffrey, 79, have three children, Yvonne, Stephen and Helen, four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
They are both born and bred in Grantham, and they happily recalled the wonderful memories they have shared together.
Both have a real passion for music and a love of the church. After meeting in St. Anne’s Church where Geoffrey spent many years as organist, it was love at first sight.
Together they have taken six church choir tours, including one to Sankt Augustin, Grantham’s twin town in Germany.
They visited other various places around Germany just after the reunification, making beautiful music with their choir wherever they went.
The pair also love to travel, although not too far from each other as before they were married they counted that their respective houses were 400 steps away from each other. They enjoy travelling on holidays to France and visiting the beautiful churches and cathedrals along the way.
During their working years, Cecilia was a trained nurse for many years, while Geoffrey was a music teacher in schools throughout Grantham.
Geoffrey said: “We’ve enjoyed ourselves.”
And it sounds like they certainly have. Fifty years on they look happy as ever, living in a lovely house which is their first marital home.
What keeps them together? “Working as a team and a good sense of humour”, said Cecilia.
