Motor mad Fraser takes a look at the Lada Niva

TEENAGE car enthusiast Fraser Lucas, 14, from Bingham, reviews the Lada Niva.

LOOKS

Despite being back in the UK again after it was taken off the market in 1996, the Niva seems not to have changed since it was launched in 1977. If you’re looking for elegance and style in a car, the Niva is not what you are looking for. However, because it hasn’t changed in the past 33 years, it still retains the rugged and indestructable appearance that makes is look tougher than a Panzer tank.

HANDLING AND PERFORMANCE

On the road the Niva isn’t much of a thrill, although it does have a good ride thanks to the coiled springs. On off road, however, is where the Niva really hits its stride. With the help of locking diffs and a low range gear box, the Niva can take on just about anything. Power comes from a 1.7 litre petrol engine, producing 79 bhp giving it a top speed of 90mph and a 0 to 60 mph time of 17.5 seconds, making it the only car on the market that’s slower than erosion, although when you get it up to speed it’s a little bit nippy.

PRACTICALITY

Even though it’s quite small for an off roader and has a basic interior, the Niva is modestly spacious. It has a decent sized boot, reasonable rear leg room and a good driving position.

COST

Prices will be at £9,995. There is also a pick up version that will cost £11,999.

VERDICT

The Niva mght not look like much, and it may be slow, but that doesn’t stop it from trying. It is reasonable in almost all areas, it’s decent to drive, spacious, and when it comes to off roading, it’ll do it anytime, any place, anywhere.
