l A railway worker punched a man in Wharf Road and was taken to the police station in a greengrocer’s cart. Patrick Roach was fined 10s and told he must carry out 14 days’ hard labour if he cannot pay. Roach asked if he could have until Saturday but was given an “emphatic no”.
