AMERICAN Air Force personnel are celebrating Christmas at their base at Barkston Heath in 1944.

The photograph was sent in by Mrs Clegg of Syston whose father Donald Clegg is one of the few British personnel invited into the photograph, pictured on the back row, tenth from the left.

Mrs Clegg also sent the Journal a copy of the Christmas dinner the personnell enjoyed which included traditional British offerings such as roast turkey and cranberry sauce, as well as more American items such as buttered snowflake potatoes, buttered yams and apple pie.

The photograph served as a postcard which personnel could send back to family back home. But they were not allowed to let anyone know where they were stationed so the postcard is marked “Somewhere in England”.
