MEMORY LANE: A brief glimpse into cycling’s halcyon days with the Grantham Aces

This photograph was brought in to the Journal office by Henry Gait, of Stoke Rochford.

It shows his brother-in-law Arthur Broughton on holiday in Great Yarmouth when he was a keen cyclist and a member of Grantham Aces – the precursor to the Witham Wheelers.

Henry said the picture was taken in the early 1950s in the halcyon days of Grantham cycling legend Jack O’Connor.

Arthur has lived in Ipswich for the last 30 to 40 years, said Henry, but lived in Cecil Street in town originally.

Henry married Arthur’s sister Kathleen, whilst Arthur celebrates his 60th wedding anniversary with his wife Jill this year.

Arthur will be 83 years old next month.
