Grantham’s outgoing mayor in 1982, Paddy Perry, was pictured putting the boot in to kick off a charity football match that raised more than £600 for children’s homes in the town.

Players from Harrowby United wore Wellington boots and donned feminine attire as they took on a team of real ladies, including Mayoress Libby Perry.

The match ended in a sporting 7-7 draw and the organisers, Judy Atter and Anne Sutherland from Coles Cranes canteen, said they were delighted by the whole occasion.

Judy said: “We were given the use of their ground, they loaned the girls’ team their strip – and as the ‘Wellie Bashers’, they gave us a good game.”
