In June, 1963 - 50 years ago this week - the Queen Mother came to Grantham and proved extremely popular, making a series of unscheduled stops.

Nearly 100 guests joined the Queen Mother for a civic lunch at the Guildhall and she made a particularly strong impression on Grantham’s then Mayor Coun R. Briggs.

He told the Journal: “The Queen Mother is a delightful lady who put us completely at our ease.

“And she was interested in everything - not just the things which we were taking her to see, although she was thrilled with all of those as well.”

The Queen Mother was told about St Wulfram’s church and insisted on a stop to have a look, leaving the event organisers with a little extra work to make arrangements. She also opened Chandos House care home.
