In January 1989, people in Grantham were bidding a fond farewell to a major landmark.

The Ruston and Hornsby factory on London Road was being demolished after a 160 year presence in the town to make way for new retail units.

It was a particularly poignant moment for one Grantham couple, Michael and Marion Shelbourne, who had met while working at Ruston and Hornsby. They are pictured above taking a final look at the remains of the building.

For Michael the factory had had a long association with his family.

He reflected that both his father and his grandfather had each chalked up 50 of service with Ruston and Hornsby.
