Plenty of ducks on show as Grantham fell to Bird

Grantham under-14s had a game to forget.
Grantham under-14s had a game to forget.

GRANTHAM’S under-14 team earned their place in the Journal twenty years ago for all the wrong reasons.

The team were all-out for just 11 runs in their cup game against Newark in 1991.

The side, made up mainly of under-13s, saw Bird of Newark take seven wickets for just four runs off five overs.

Grantham actually got off to a flying start, with opener Duncan Whittle making three before the majority of the team lost their wicket for ducks.

Cookson grabbed two runs but Grantham’s top scorer was the extras column which clocked up six runs.

Newark surpassed the Grantham total in 3.1 overs.

Incredibly, in the team’s next game they were set a total of 143 against Whatton and reached the target with five wickets to spare.
