THESE players from the 1993 Three Gables team were terribly unlucky to miss out on silverware in March of 1993.
The side had made it through to the final of the Charity Cup, taking on BG of Newark. The northerners had the best of the early exchanges but neither side could break the deadlock in normal time .
In extra-time, it was Newark who took the lead with a goal from Dave Rouse, only for the Three Gables to quickly hit back.
Nicknames in football are commonplace, just look at Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez at Manchester United. Well, the Grantham equivalent in 1993 was Three Gables striker “Poo” Higgs, who grabbed the equalising goal to make it 1-1.
Gables briefly held the lead when Trev Bunn scored from outside the area, only for Paul Clarke to level.
Both sides scored their first three spot kicks in the penalty decider before Anthony Dixon and Mark Fardell failed to find the net.
