A quartet of Britain’s finest acting talent shines at the Reel, Grantham
A very British film featuring the finest of this country’s acting talent is enjoying a second week at The Reel in Grantham.
Quartet stars Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Billy Connolly who live in a home for ageing opera stars. Each year the residents celebrate the birthday of Verdi by holding a musical concert in the home to raise money to keep it going. The idea of a quartet made up of Smith, Courtenay, Collins and Connolly doesn’t go down well with some and tensions rise.
Quartet is a gentle, but winning comedy based on the play by Ronald Harwood. The performances are very good and Connolly (unsurprisingly) is very funny, playing a ‘dirty old’ man. The play is a successful mixture of tragedy and comedy, a balance which the Brits are usually good at getting right. The film continues at the Reel next week.
Starting today (Friday) is the much vaunted Les Miserables, a big budget version of the musical starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway - but can they sing?
