Children’s choir sings Britten’s carols

A free concert performed by local children will help welcome in the Christmas season at St Wulfram’s Church on Saturday (December 15).

St Wulfram’s Children’s Choir will sing A ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten. Directed by Tim Williams, Director of Music at the church, the choir will be accompanied by harpist Brian Wilson who worked with Britten.

Dr Williams said: “The Ceremony of Carols is written for a children’s choir in three-part harmony, a series of carols that helps recount the Christmas story.”

The choir is made up of more than 30 children aged between seven and 14. This year they have sung at York Minster and Salisbury, Lincoln and Peterborough Cathedrals.

Dr Williams added: “The children are all from local schools, and are offered musical and vocal training towards singing sacred choral music. Being a chorister is a big commitment, but an outstanding musical opportunity. There are currently over 30 choristers in the choir, in addition to our adult choirs.

“This concert is in addition to our schedule of carol services over the Christmas period. Admission is free, but there will be a
retiring collection towards the music funds of St Wulfram’s Church.”

The concert takes place tomorrow at 11.30am and lasts half an hour.

Refreshments will be available from the coffee shop before and after the performance.
