Traditionally the hunt, based at kennels at Belvoir Castle, is greeted by the Mayor of Grantham at the Guildhall in St Peter’s Hill.

Hundreds of people gathered in the morning to witness the spectacle.

It was one of the biggest days for the hunt in recent years, with hunts around the country reporting high levels of support.

Agriculture minister Jim Paice told supporters of the Fitzwilliam Hunt in Peterborough that he is in favour of allowing hunting with dogs and that a free vote on the repeal of the Hunting Act would be held in the House of Commons by the Coalition government.

Since the ban was introduced in 2005, hunts have been prohibited from using hounds to pursue foxes as well as other creatures including hare and mink.

Hunts continue to hold their traditional meets, and use scented decoys to attract the hounds.

l Should the hunting ban be repealed? Or is it a cruel sport that has no place in modern society?

@8 - cage fighting? With a fox? No problem. I'd kick ten barrels out of it.

@no6... make that 4 people a bunch of toffs prancing around on horses in their sunday best to go torture and kill animals, and my god the practice of smearing the foxes blood all over themselves ... barbaric, and they call this a "sport" if joe blogs did this he would be labeled a psychopath! I'm with frank... put them in a cage with something that at least has a chance of fighting back.

@no6. I was born on a farm and did as much as possible to disrupt the Hunt. My dad even took to shooting Foxes that looked like being caught in the open. Hunts Persons should be made to take part in Cage Fighting to see just how hard they really are.

The fact that only 3 of you have bothered to make a negative comment sums it up really. And Bluto, you were even there, although from a distance, it still showed support. You just jump on the Liberal 'band wagon' because a tradition now doesn't suit, but then all want to bring back hanging when a youth knocks over some gravestones. How very hypocritical.

I have no doubt that the estate workers hearty display of support for their land lords was genuine, as I am sure that the recent North Korean outpourings of grief were also genuine.

Yes, 'spectacle' would be one word to describe that archaic and utterly disgusting practice!
