PRIME Minister David Cameron has backed proposals for the re-opening of Grantham Museum in a letter of support sent to Grantham Community Heritage Association.

The group is working to re-open the museum this summer after the county council’s decision to withdraw all funding.

The museum has been hailed in the past by Grantham MP Nick Boles as a shining example of the government’s “Big Society” drive and now it has received similar backing from the Prime Minister.

In a letter to Graham Jeal, chairman of Grantham Community Heritage Association, David Cameron wrote: “The success of the Big Society - about which I am passionate - will depend on communities coming together to take responsibility and look for solutions to the problems they face, rather than turning to the Government for answers.

“I was delighted to hear about the successful steps you have taken to keep this local museum open to the benefit of the community.

“I wish you every success with your endeavours.”

The plan is for the letter to be on display in the new-look museum once it re-opens in June.

Mr Jeal said: “The letter is a nice thank you to the volunteers who have been working so hard on the museum, particularly in the final quarter of last year.

“It is great to have the recognition and a big thank you to Nick Boles for helping to arrange it.”

The heritage association is hoping for a busy next few weeks. The group hopes it will soon achieve charity status, while details on a new membership scheme for members of the public is also in the pipeline.

The association is also expecting to receive initial draft plans for the new-look museum from designers Smith and Jones Design Consultants.
