HUNTINGTOWER Primary School opened a brand new kitchen to rave reviews from pupils and staff alike this school year.

The addition, which cost an estimated £300,000, was the final part of a bigger project which added seven new classes as well as a library.

The new menus offer a wide range of healthy meals. Headteacher Mark Anderson said “they were selected to be balanced” so that pupils get all the right nutritional values.

As well as being healthy, the meals are going down a treat. Mr Anderson said: “We used to have a lot of waste. Now we get back empty plates.”

This is the first time that the school has cooked on site, previously relying on hot meals being brought in from outside sources. Now they are working with food4thought to produce the menus which allow the pupils to have a choice that they can make in advance or on the day.

The kitchen marks the final stage to a project that started in 2009 to renovate the school. After three years of work and a budget of around £3 million, the kitchen was finished in February but not opened until September in order to “hit the ground running” for the new school year.

Included in the project were sensory classes, a studio, offices and a new staffroom. The budget also went into repairing and maintaining the hallways.

Mr Anderson added that Huntingtower Primary is a community school and therefore is willing to extend its facilities to the local area for certain functions.
