QUALITY entertainment is coming to Aslackby as villagers work to raise money for their village hall.

A folk concert will take place at the hall tomorrow (Saturday), starring award-winning Jackie Oates and Karen Tweed.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the upkeep of the village hall, which has a history going back to the turn of the 20th century.

Jackie is a singer and fiddle player, while Karen is a piano accordionist.

Jackie is the winner of two BBC Folk Awards 2009, and was shortlisted for the fRoots Critics Poll Album 2009 with her album ‘Hyperboreans’, which reached number five in the Mojo Folk Album of the Year Chart 2009.

A successful 2009 was followed in 2010 by main stage performances at the UK’s biggest folk festivals, and the release of her fourth studio album ‘Saturnine’ last year.

The Staffordshire musician is known for her unique take on English ballads and her haunting singing style.

Meanwhile, Karen began to play the piano accordion at the age of 11 and went on to study with Lawry Eady, Warren Eagle and finally with button accordionist John Whelan, who was her biggest inspiration and fired her passion for Irish traditional music.

She turned professional in 1989, working with singer/songwriter Roger Wilson, and then went on to become a founder member of the Poozies.

Her playing is known for being lyrical and expressive.

The doors at Aslackby Village Hall open at 7.30pm.

Tickets to the folk concert are £12. To buy, call 01778 440974 or 07740 832750, or e-mail dvsmthdavid@aol.com

Guests are asked to take along their own drinks.
