Visitors step into the old Grantham burial ground during Lincolnshire Heritage Weekend

WALKING past the unremarkable brick wall in Manthorpe Road, you would never know that behind it lies a fascinating piece of Grantham’s history.

Just a stone’s throw from the busy road is the old Grantham cemetery, which opened to members of the public last Sunday as part of the Lincolnshire Heritage Weekend. Members of Grantham Civic Society volunteered themselves as stewards for the day.

Courtney Finn, of the civic society, said: “The Manthorpe Road burial ground is where most St Wulframs’ burials took place after 1812 when St Wulfram’s churchyard was full except for existing family graves.

“The burial ground was used until the municipal cemetary was opened in 1856 at Harrowby Road. It is a quiet and peaceful spot unknown to many people.”
