FUNDING totalling £78,000 has been awarded to villagers in Caythorpe for repairs to their church.

News of the grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund has given a boost to those involved with St Vincent’s Church, who are keen to see the building remain as a community facility.

The money will go towards the repatching of the roof and the repointing of the spire.

The Rev June Freshney said: “We open the church to the community for social occasions, for concerts and for charity work as well as worship. We want it to be a dry and safe environment for the people that use it.”

Sally Kelway, who worked on the grant application, added: “We are custodians for the future.”

The cost of the entire refurbishment is £143,000, with fund-raisers planned to raise the rest.

It is hoped the work will be complete by December 2014.

Planning is already underway, with a summer lunch, Christmas tree festival and teddy bear parachute drop among the fund-raising ventures coming up.

The group behind the church work is keen to hear fund-raising suggestions.
