Wednesday, 3.55pm - A MOTHER and her two daughters will march in London against animal testing - and are appealing for people from Grantham to join them.
Abbie, Christina and Sharon Bengston of Colsterworth will join the march to mark World Day for Animals in Laboratories on April 25.

Animal welfare is something the Bengston family have always been passionate about.

Abbie Bengston, 30, of School Lane, Colsterworth, said: "My sister works for an animal welfare charity and it is something we all feel very strongly about. All three of us are vegans.

"I know it is a very sensitive subject for a lot of people but most people are animal-lovers and I think the march will have a lot of support."

Sharon Bengston goes into schools to speak for Animal Aid and educate children on the importance of animal welfare.

Christina Bengston, 27, said: "Experiments on animals need to stop now - we should judge how future generations judge us.

"Vivisection is unscientific, does not benefit people and seriously hurts animals and human character."

Abbie, Christina and Sharon plan to organise a bus from Grantham to take them down to London for the march.

If anyone is interested in going along, they can contact Abbie on 01476 861917.

As much as I disagree with so-called 'Bad Science' and the incorrect and inapropriate use of animals in experimentation, please tell me why you have to bring veganism into it all? It seems that some people think that animal cruelty and eating meat go hand in hand and this is not always true. I hate to see animals treated badly as much as the next man, but I am a carnivore. Let's leave the two subjects apart shall we?

I can't agree about animal based research being unscientific or that it doesn't have benefits. Until recently I was in massive pain due to spinal problems. After surgery on my spine the pain levels have greatly dropped, and I'm able to enjoy life much more.

The operation was a success, and was only possible thanks to bone fusion studies carried out in sheep and goats. Animal research works. If it didn't, I'd still be in appalling pain.

I agree with Kevin, and I even said so in a previous comment which has been reported as unsuitable for some strange reason since all it said was this:

Countless medical breakthroughs have been made as a result of using animals in scientific research - insulin, HIV treatments and the vaccine for cervical cancer are examples. So I think it is completely wrong to say that animal research is "unscientific" and "does not benefit people". The numerous life saving treatments that have been developed as a result of animal based research suggest to me that the views expressed in this article are naive and ill-informed.

Whilst I totally understand the comments above and where they come from, afterall, back pain is beyond awful and to find a cure is wonderful..However, the point is that we should not be letting animals suffer in order to do this. It is a misconception that scientists are all for animal testing and it's just a bunch of looneys that are against. Many scientists believe that medical research will move much quicker once we stop using species that have little or nothing to do with us biologically and begin to use up to date techniques. I don't think anybody claims that no advance has been made, but it has been slow and arduous and many times dangerously wrong. There are many instances of drugs that passed animal tests that then went on to maim or kill humans, this just isn't on. Medised is a drug freely available for children (cold medicine) and has been used on babies for years, now they have decided it can damage young babies and is considered dangerous, so while you are happy about your surgery, many parents could now face torture over their children's health thanks to animal testing and it's uselessness overall. Bottom line is, if you consider yourself an animal lover, scientifically progressive or someone who really wants a cure for terrible diseases like cancer quicker, you will support a new, accurate way forward in medical testing & put an end to the medieval practices that are happening now.
