Thursday, 4.15pm - A SCHOOL which encourages its pupils to walk to school was commended for its participation in the county council's Star Walkers scheme today.
Bottesford Primary School was presented with a certificate for taking part in the scheme for over a year.

Leicestershire County Council introduced Star Walkers to promote a healthy lifestyle and reduce congestion and pollution at the school gate.

Pupils are given a Star Walker passport which is stamped each time they walk to school. Stamps are exchanged for rewards, such as stationery.

County cabinet support member for highways Joe Orson presented the certificate to headteacher Louise McGrory.

He said: "The schools has had the scheme in place for well over a year, which is a fantastic achievement.

"An important aspect of the scheme is to help the children realise why walking to school is preferable to arriving in car.

"The school is obviously active in promoting the positive benefits of walking.

The latest figures show an average increase of more than 20 per cent in the number of children who walk to school at participating schools.
