Staff from Huntingtower Primary School joined in a Polish class with teachers at Sir Isaac Newton Primary School on Monday.

Caroline Dul, of Grantham based EM Centre for Learning, taught the class, having spent nine years teaching English in Poland

She said: "So many schools have got newly arrived Polish children and they think it would be nice to at least be able to say their names properly and be able to ask whether they understand something.

"I think it would be wrong to expect anybody to dash out and learn Polish, it is only right that any migrants who choose to live here should try to learn English, but my course is not about learning the language.

"It is only 3 hours long and aims to remove the fear of those consecutive consonants found in the Polish language by focusing on the phonetic similarities to our own."

Caroline has also been working with Lincolnshire Police to help officers to better communicate with the Polish community.

She said :"I know what it is like to live in a foreign country, especially when you are struggling with the language.

"I enrolled my children in a Polish mainstream primary school when they didn't speak a word of Polish, so my kids have first hand experience.

"I am an English person, so I understand the problems and the difficulties."

Stephen Tapley, headmaster at Sir Isaac Newton Primary School, believes having Eastern European children at the school benefits all of the pupils.


He said: "It is our first attempt at making those children more welcome.

"We have 12 or 13 children from various parts of Europe and I have nothing but positive things to say about the experience.

"It does not take anything away from what the English children are getting in school. It broadens their experiences and makes them feel more proud of the way they are brought up."
