A man who decided to mark his 58th birthday by attempting the spire abseil ended up in Grantham Hospital.

David Feld (pictured, right), of Third Avenue, Grantham, decided the coincidence of his birthday falling on Saturday was an opportunity to make it memorable.

“And it was memorable,” he said. “For all the wrong reasons. It was horrifying.”

David continued: “I have been involved in car crashes, I have been physically assaulted, but I’ve never experienced anything like that. It was terrifying. Never again!”

He said he was was so frightened and relieved to reach the ground he had a panic attack and blacked out. After receiving first aid, he was taken to A&E as a precaution and was told he may have mild concussion as a result of the collapse.

He said: “It was a spur of the moment thing to do. It was really unsettling in places because you are not in contact with the wall as you go down.

“I don’t regret it, but I can’t see me doing it again, or at least not without a bit of training or more experience of climbing and then coming down a tall structure. I might have a go on a climbing wall.”
